Learning English as a Second Language (ESL) has become a family activity for the Riveras. The family attends ESL classes for non-native English speaking parents and their children held at the Avion Place Apartments community center.

The Riveras migrated to San Antonio from Puerto Rico by way of the military in 2006 and have lived at Avion ever since. Mrs. Blexin Rivera, who is originally from Panama, recalls how difficult it was for her 14-year-old son Jovanny to make the adjustment.
“When we first moved here, Jovanny really struggled to speak English,” said Blexin. “As for me, I can read and write English, but I’m still terrified to speak it.”
The entire family is grateful to have ESL instruction right in their own apartment community. The classes are provided through the resident services program in collaboration with the Benitia Family Center.
Slowly but surely, Blexin said, the classes are helping her family overcome language barriers. “We are developing our language skills more and more every day,” she said. “Even my 3-year-old son is speaking more English.”
In addition to developing their language skills, the Riveras are developing a sense of belonging at Avion Place Apartments. “Jovanny is very motivated to participate in property events and is always encouraging us to volunteer as a family,” she said. “He likes San Antonio and Avion Place because he believes that he can become a better person here.”
